our baby knows

Written and directed by Zimbabwean born, Cincinnati based filmmaker David Chimusoro, Our Baby Knows is an intimate culture tale in which a young father explains a harsh reality to his son for the very first time using two familiar stories of triumph to soften the blow for his son (and himself).

Centered around the conversation of race, and born out of the crucible of 2020; Our Baby Knows is an unflinching yet hopeful infusion to an increasingly polarizing yet necessary conversation. By telling the story through the lens of the father and son dynamic, Our Baby Knows allows its audience to wrestle with the harsh reality as if it were their very own, and to engage in the topic of race in a new and refreshing way.

Best watched in the company of those you can laugh and be vulnerable with, this family story sets the stage for honest and open dialogue after its twelve minute run time. After watching, director Chimusoro encourages you to engage in the following questions amongst your viewing party and fully lean into the conversation that follows.

    Question 1.

What is a moment that made you feel like a champion? (Think the closest you ever felt to a real-life superhero).

    Question 2.

When was the first time you realized that something was wrong with the world and how do you remember feeling? (Share only what you feel comfortable sharing).

    Question 3.

In the film, the father has to explain to his son why what he looks like is the reason Jake's parents won't let them be best friends anymore and the history behind it.

What was new to you about their conversation or how they had it? If not new, when did you first have a similar conversation?

    Question 4.

All of the "different stories" the father told involved a situation that seemed hopeless at first but ultimately turned out well. If today is the lowest moment in the conversation of race how do we start to tell a different story?

    Question 5.

At your work, school, hobbies, church and everywhere you go. How can you start making everyone feel like they just won a championship by getting to know you?
